She is the youngest daughter of Irene and John Wesley Dobbs, one of Atlanta's most prominent African American leaders before the Civil Rights Movement. Butts is also the aunt of the late Honorable Maynard Jackson, Atlanta's first black mayor. Butts received her B.A. degree in sociology from Spelman College in 1948, setting a national education record -- six sisters graduating from the same college. That same summer, Butts worked with her close friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Then, in the fall of 1948, she entered the Teacher's College of Columbia University in New York City, where she received her Ed.D. degree in family life education. Butts' professional career began in 1950 as a professor in the psychology department at Fisk University. She went on to work at Tennessee State University, Howard University College of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, where she was also a researcher. While serving on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood in the 1970s, Butts met famed sex researchers Masters and Johnson, who invited her to join their staff at the Reproductive Biology Research Foundation (later called Masters and Johnson Institute) in St. Louis, Missouri. There, Butts became the first African American to be trained as a sex therapist by Masters and Johnson. She later served as a visiting scientist at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. Butts resides in Atlanta. YR: But also internally within our own community. When I started the film, I actually thought I was going to focus much more on White racism within the LGBT community and look at Prop 8 and how Blacks were blamed for the passage of Prop 8. How these White, mainstream, LGBT, male-led movements did not work with people of color, and then turned around and blamed them. That was really my initial motivation or thinking on it. But then when I met Sharon and started delving into the issue and understanding it, she was like, "Yes, that may all be true but we have work that we have to do within the Black community, internally, in terms of the church being one of our own main arbiters of what's right and wrong. We have to look at what's going on there." And that's what led me down the path that it led me, in terms of the film.
MAM: There was another thing in the film that I thought was so fascinating, and it's the fact that the people on the right, the conservative side, are mostly Black males. Why do you think that is? Does the Black male identity regulate religion?
YR: Exactly. But definitely the institution is a male-dominated institution. Now there are exceptions and it's not all churches and there are women ministers. But institutionally it's a patriarchal system.
MAM: There was a point in the film when a woman gets up and says, "I did not choose to be Black and female." There's this whole ongoing argument about nurture versus nature that informs whether or not this is the new Civil Rights Movement or not.
