Black Male Gay Masters

Zanele Muholi is a South African activist and artist. She works primarily in photography and video. Despite her fame as an artist, Muholi identifies herself as an activist first. It is her intention to use her art to highlight the beauty and individuality of black LGBTQ women: a group that she believes has been terribly underrepresented in all forms of art. So, instead of waiting for someone else to validate LGBT women of color, she took it upon herself to bring the struggles, needs, and beauty of these women to light.

In 2014, Jason Collins made history by becoming the first male professional athlete to publicly identify himself as gay. After his announcement, a flood of other queer athletes began declaring their sexuality, revealing to the world that some of our greatest sports figures are in fact LGBTQ. This was a milestone for the fight for equality because, as Collins says, being open about sexual orientation is an important step towards ending prejudice.

It was 1981, a wild year for me by all standards. I was stationed in the Midwest, going to school for the Air Force. One night after passing a particular hard test, me and two buddies went out on the town to celebrate. At the time I was 18, as were my friends. We took a bus downtown and proceeded to party hardy. We went to every club we could get served in and tried our best to fit in and find some girls to party with. The night went on and after about 1 or 2 in the morning, with no female companions to share the night with we started to head home. Problem was, we had no idea where we were and the one guy who knew the area had disappeared 2 hours before.

YR: But also internally within our own community. When I started the film, I actually thought I was going to focus much more on White racism within the LGBT community and look at Prop 8 and how Blacks were blamed for the passage of Prop 8. How these White, mainstream, LGBT, male-led movements did not work with people of color, and then turned around and blamed them. That was really my initial motivation or thinking on it. But then when I met Sharon and started delving into the issue and understanding it, she was like, "Yes, that may all be true but we have work that we have to do within the Black community, internally, in terms of the church being one of our own main arbiters of what's right and wrong. We have to look at what's going on there." And that's what led me down the path that it led me, in terms of the film.

MAM: There was another thing in the film that I thought was so fascinating, and it's the fact that the people on the right, the conservative side, are mostly Black males. Why do you think that is? Does the Black male identity regulate religion?

YR: Exactly. But definitely the institution is a male-dominated institution. Now there are exceptions and it's not all churches and there are women ministers. But institutionally it's a patriarchal system.

MAM: There was a point in the film when a woman gets up and says, "I did not choose to be Black and female." There's this whole ongoing argument about nurture versus nature that informs whether or not this is the new Civil Rights Movement or not.

While surfing the M4M area rooms, week after week, I finally met someone who seemed to be my "type" of guy. However, in chatting with him I discovered we were not compatible to meet, but I asked him about his area experiences. One question I asked was if he had ever gone "black."

It was difficult to set a date to meet, with a 40-mile drive in Rush hour traffic, and both of us facing family commitments. After missing him once at a cafe and not hearing from him for a month, we finally picked a date and time, and I nervously drove an hour to get to his house. Until now the most I had ever done with a black man was to shake his hand... Guys don't turn me on at all,as a rule and here I was on my way to meet a guy that gets head for money . And has said that he doesn't do any thing much more , but it was that mystique of crossing the interracial line intrigued me. Also it was so different from the expectation we have for females who do sex for money . 041b061a72
